In Bloom

From Museum object to contemporary art, discover how flowers have inspired generations of artists from East and Southeast Asia.

Hanami is the Japanese tradition of flower viewing - a time to enjoy flowers while they are bloom. While it’s an opportunity to cerebrate the beauty of blossoms, particularly cherry blossoms, during hanami viewers are also encouraged to reflect on their own mortality, with the short flowering season encouraging us all to live life to the full.

In this sprit, In Bloom brings together the work of contemporary artists and makers whose work has been inspired by flowers. Their work is shown alongside a selection of flower-themed from the Museum’s collection. As you explore artworks new and old, we invite you to take part in your own vision of hanami - a moment of pause, reflect and enjoy the Museum while in bloom.
